the flaw that's apparent in today's economy is that there are simply not enough jobs for the people who need jobs. this will only increase as automation and international free-trade increases.
there aren't enough jobs. also, there are a lot of sick and disabled people. refugees, too. the alternative to a welfare system under those circumstances is starvation for a certain percentage of the population.
a strong welfare system is necessary in an economy that has more jobs than people. if society needs work done, like more schools, or better hospitals, then it can create those jobs using taxpayer's money. this is socialism.
unless you can point to a purely capitalist society that actually works? I'm pretty sure that before we had things like worker's rights, child labour laws, and a welfare system, things were really bad. that's the sort of thing I'm talking about.
every stable economy these days requires a centralised welfare system. whether you see it as property-theft by a fascist, socialist government, or whether you see it as a positive investment into the society you have to live in, taxes and welfare are necessary for the economy.
nations like Norway, or even Iceland, aren't exactly running themselves into the ground economically. we are an oil-rich nation, just like Norway. a Norwegian's take-home pay after tax is more than ours.
capitalism means people own their own money. socialism means a centralised system that looks after the society. if it's done in the spirit of democracy, taxes really do become an investment into your society. housing the homeless and giving them a basic income will do wonders for crime rates, house prices, and public health spending. this is the basis of a Social Democracy. we don't go nuts and ban businesses from competing, but we do make sure they don't screw up the planet, and that they contribute to society." my girlfriend and I are working on a GPL-licensed script to help facilitate direct democracy. it will be released on Sourceforge or Github when it's in a very simplified stage. I will be running a demonstration of it as a sort of game set on a pretend island where people can vote for all sorts of crazy laws, but the underlying software will be eventually adaptable into all sorts of systems, from a co-operative corporation to a UN/EU-style international parliament. it could even be used informally, as a way for an MP to poll his/her constituents. the fact is that it will exist, and will be available for all to use for free.
the point isn't even to decide on a better system of government or economy. a direct democracy filled with capitalists would be a capitalist society. a direct democracy full of socialists would be a socialist society. it's just to give everybody a voice, eventually doing away with the concepts of "leaders" as politicians, and merely hire MPs as clerks to administrate the people's will. if they don't do what we want, we sack 'em.
it's my belief that putting the people in charge will create a social democracy. a humane society where the rich and successful are not vilified by the population for being rich while they struggle, but praised for contributing to society, and where taxes that lessen the level of poverty in society are seen by the rich as an investment into the world they live in.
a direct democracy puts the responsibility for society into the hands of the individual. with a transparent budget and an evidence-based approach to taxation and spending, I am confident we can find ways for all of us to enjoy what we have. the next stage in economic theory will emerge from a system like that." what is unique to this technology is that under fiat currency, each unit of currency is equal to a share of stock in the corporation of the state, which while not redeemable via the state, is insured by the state, and functions as a medium of exchange, unit of account and at least short term store of value. digital currency represents a divisible, fractional share of the issuing network. the state currency is insured by the state, but the digital currency is private and uninsured. the state is more likely to demand that any network of sufficient scale is insured for it to be issued to the public without harm. I expect this legislation to appear within the coming decade.
digital currency merely removes the middleman – the bank – from the distribution channel for the currency, and therefore the need for the bank to insure each transaction during the period of clearance when performing an escrow service.
this is the primary value of all bitcoin related technologies.
conversely, it is not rational to expect that the state will allow a digital currency to remain unregulated primarily because it is a ready-made vehicle for tax evasion and money laundering (as we have already seen). and digital currencies rely upon infrastructure that is too perishable (even more so thank ATM networks) and as such the economic impact of such currency failure is too vast. so digital currencies will never evolve into replacements for fiat money, they may only be used as a store of value against the loss of purchasing power of the fiat currency, when the money supply is inflated.
so the post-hard-currency era (I predict) will eliminate banks as a means of central distribution of credit to consumers, and function entirely as means of financing business credit. and transaction costs will drop precipitously since there is no escrow risk on the part of the bank.
but I might as well bark at the moon because the people who talk about their fantasies for bitcoin are ideologues who have very little comprehension of about that which they speak.

"working with deep-seated beliefs is not as easy as most believe (pardon the pun).
it's one thing to work with what we think are our beliefs, the one's we are consciously aware of. but for many reasons, it is entirely different to work with deep, sub-conscious beliefs.
...first, most people have limited, at best, understanding of what their subconscious beliefs are. truly understanding one's deep-seated beliefs is a potentially difficult task for many. typically, the deeper the belief the more work is required to get at it. I'm not going to get into specifics here, but will say that it requires extreme self-honesty, open-mindedness, willingness to be uncomfortable when identifying the beliefs, and a host of other 'process' oriented issues. the bottom line is that most of the beliefs that people find maladaptive or wish to change are usually very deep-seated and not easily worked with. subsequently, there is the question of how to effectively alter or replace those beliefs in a way that is sustainable over time.
over the years I've seen more and more people become 'experts' after reading a book or two, or becoming 'certified' in a particular system of belief change. there is nothing inherently wrong with that. the problem is that many of these systems don't lead to lasting, sustained change. adding new beliefs on top of a foundation of opposing deep-seated subconscious beliefs is generally not a good recipe for lasting change. like building or re-modeling a house, you can't ignore the foundation (which is usually underground and not seen).
now, add the fact that as traders in the market our judgments are constantly being tested as we face constant uncertainty. it's no wonder why 'altering beliefs' is so difficult for traders. I decided to work with traders because there is a huge need for experienced, knowledgeable guidance in this area.
on the front page of my web site, it reads: 'Our beliefs, expectations, and emotions act as a filter on our perception of the market, our filter projects a structure onto price action that forms the basis for trade entries and exits. We don't see the market itself, we see our projection. It is simply human nature to see things through our own personal filter.'
if you wish to work with your beliefs, please consider doing so in a comprehensive manner that will lead to lasting change. otherwise, you may end up like the majority of folks who embark on a path to alter their beliefs only to see short-term benefits. in fact, based on what I've seen over many years, most people are unable to maintain lasting change for more then 3 months, and usually much shorter, as in weeks. it's no coincidence that many traders can perform well for a period of time, weeks, maybe a few months, but end up right back where they started, or even worse sometimes. I have seen people successfully change their beliefs on their own, without guidance, but it requires herculean strength, a deep, personal resonance with the particular method or approach (meaningfulness), and an unwavering commitment. guidance from an experienced professional can save time, energy, and money."

When the cycle comes around to commemorate the spectacles of 1968 in Chicago, Paris or Prague, few people outside Mexico remember that the real bloodbath that year was in Mexico City.
It is not the hands wearing black gloves held aloft by American athletes at the Olympics that year, but the white gloves of the army's Olympia Brigade, which fired upon crowds of students and families in the Tlatelolco district of Mexico City, killing 350 people in cold blood, that will be recalled.
This was the quintessence of political violence in Mexico for decades, between the state and the leftist opposition. These were the faultlines which detonated the Zapatista movement in Chiapas during the mid-1990s, the mobilisation of workers in wretched sweatshops along the US border, the near rise to power of leftist López Obrador in his 2006 electoral bid.
Only since that year has ideological violence been subsumed by the savagery of the war of narco cartels between each other and, so it is claimed, the state.
Into this narrative enters the likelihood – now confirmed by both the attorney general of Guerrero state, Iñaki Blanco, and the Guerreros Unidos cartel in his territory – that some, if not all, the students arrested during the Ayotzinapa protest were handed over by police to the cartel for summary execution. Inevitably the barbaric procedure invokes protest in the streets that echoes 1968: crowds occupy the famous Zócalo plaza and set the door of President Peña Nieto's national palace ablaze.
But the significance of these savage executions – bodies tortured and torched or dumped in a river – lies in the entwining of ideological and narco violence: two nightmares, two perfidious calculations, in one.
Mexican governments – under presidents Vicente Fox, Felipe Calderón and now Peña Nieto – have tried to present their war against the narcos as a state apparatus against organised crime. This is also the bleat of the US as it provides "aid" for the "war on drugs" while also exulting in the opportunities for "investment" in Mexico. Britain also blathers on about "trading opportunities" with Mexico and support for its fight against crime. We must buy the lie, continue the pretence.
However, for a long time the world's bravest reporters have challenged this version of events. Mexico's leading writers, Lydia Cacho and Anabel Hernández, received serial death threats for proving that the authorities – politicians, police, army – are synonymous with the cartels or in league with them.
Others on the left have always asked, to general derision: where are the armed forces in all this? What connects the state violence of the 1960s to the narco war? The late Charles Bowden, America's great writer on the border, wrote of "the biggest cartel in Mexico: the Mexican army." Julián Cardona, the great chronicler and photographer of the narco war in Ciudad Juárez during its grim primacy as the world's most dangerous city, always said that the same hand of state behind violence against the left was at play among the drug lords.
Lesser writers on Mexico, including myself, have insisted that the line between legitimacy and criminality, upon which Mexico's international relations are based, is a fantasy, that the line between legality and illegality is a lie, not only within Mexico, but internationally, with regard to the laundering of the profits of crime.
The Mexican state, however, continued with such language as that of General Jorge Juárez Loera, commander of the 11th Military Region, who told a press conference in Chihuahua in 2008: "I would like to see the reporters change their articles and where they say 'one more murdered person' instead say, 'one less criminal'."
Now we can see the arguments advanced by Cacho and Hernández, Bowden and Cardona, utterly vindicated by, in their way, the most shocking of many appalling mass murders that have taken the death toll past 100,000 since 2006, with 20,000 missing. Shocking, because it is now brazenly clear that the Mexican state and cartel death squads are as one.
Until now perhaps the most poignantly innocent victims in any single massacre were 72 migrants from Central America summarily executed in 2010 for failure to pay added fees to their traffickers, probably the Zetas cartel. Now these young people are kidnapped from their village of Ayotzinapa, near the tourist resort of Acapulco, by police from nearby Iguala, apparently on instructions from the mayor, worried that a protest might spoil a public event hosted by his wife. "working with deep-seated beliefs is not as easy as most believe (pardon the pun).
it's one thing to work with what we think are our beliefs, the one's we are consciously aware of. but for many reasons, it is entirely different to work with deep, sub-conscious beliefs.
...first, most people have limited, at best, understanding of what their subconscious beliefs are. truly understanding one's deep-seated beliefs is a potentially difficult task for many. typically, the deeper the belief the more work is required to get at it. I'm not going to get into specifics here, but will say that it requires extreme self-honesty, open-mindedness, willingness to be uncomfortable when identifying the beliefs, and a host of other 'process' oriented issues. the bottom line is that most of the beliefs that people find maladaptive or wish to change are usually very deep-seated and not easily worked with. subsequently, there is the question of how to effectively alter or replace those beliefs in a way that is sustainable over time.
over the years I've seen more and more people become 'experts' after reading a book or two, or becoming 'certified' in a particular system of belief change. there is nothing inherently wrong with that. the problem is that many of these systems don't lead to lasting, sustained change. adding new beliefs on top of a foundation of opposing deep-seated subconscious beliefs is generally not a good recipe for lasting change. like building or re-modeling a house, you can't ignore the foundation (which is usually underground and not seen).
now, add the fact that as traders in the market our judgments are constantly being tested as we face constant uncertainty. it's no wonder why 'altering beliefs' is so difficult for traders. I decided to work with traders because there is a huge need for experienced, knowledgeable guidance in this area.
on the front page of my web site, it reads: 'Our beliefs, expectations, and emotions act as a filter on our perception of the market, our filter projects a structure onto price action that forms the basis for trade entries and exits. We don't see the market itself, we see our projection. It is simply human nature to see things through our own personal filter.'
if you wish to work with your beliefs, please consider doing so in a comprehensive manner that will lead to lasting change. otherwise, you may end up like the majority of folks who embark on a path to alter their beliefs only to see short-term benefits. in fact, based on what I've seen over many years, most people are unable to maintain lasting change for more then 3 months, and usually much shorter, as in weeks. it's no coincidence that many traders can perform well for a period of time, weeks, maybe a few months, but end up right back where they started, or even worse sometimes. I have seen people successfully change their beliefs on their own, without guidance, but it requires herculean strength, a deep, personal resonance with the particular method or approach (meaningfulness), and an unwavering commitment. guidance from an experienced professional can save time, energy, and money."

When the cycle comes around to commemorate the spectacles of 1968 in Chicago, Paris or Prague, few people outside Mexico remember that the real bloodbath that year was in Mexico City.
It is not the hands wearing black gloves held aloft by American athletes at the Olympics that year, but the white gloves of the army's Olympia Brigade, which fired upon crowds of students and families in the Tlatelolco district of Mexico City, killing 350 people in cold blood, that will be recalled.
This was the quintessence of political violence in Mexico for decades, between the state and the leftist opposition. These were the faultlines which detonated the Zapatista movement in Chiapas during the mid-1990s, the mobilisation of workers in wretched sweatshops along the US border, the near rise to power of leftist López Obrador in his 2006 electoral bid.
Only since that year has ideological violence been subsumed by the savagery of the war of narco cartels between each other and, so it is claimed, the state.
Into this narrative enters the likelihood – now confirmed by both the attorney general of Guerrero state, Iñaki Blanco, and the Guerreros Unidos cartel in his territory – that some, if not all, the students arrested during the Ayotzinapa protest were handed over by police to the cartel for summary execution. Inevitably the barbaric procedure invokes protest in the streets that echoes 1968: crowds occupy the famous Zócalo plaza and set the door of President Peña Nieto's national palace ablaze.
But the significance of these savage executions – bodies tortured and torched or dumped in a river – lies in the entwining of ideological and narco violence: two nightmares, two perfidious calculations, in one.
Mexican governments – under presidents Vicente Fox, Felipe Calderón and now Peña Nieto – have tried to present their war against the narcos as a state apparatus against organised crime. This is also the bleat of the US as it provides "aid" for the "war on drugs" while also exulting in the opportunities for "investment" in Mexico. Britain also blathers on about "trading opportunities" with Mexico and support for its fight against crime. We must buy the lie, continue the pretence.
However, for a long time the world's bravest reporters have challenged this version of events. Mexico's leading writers, Lydia Cacho and Anabel Hernández, received serial death threats for proving that the authorities – politicians, police, army – are synonymous with the cartels or in league with them.
Others on the left have always asked, to general derision: where are the armed forces in all this? What connects the state violence of the 1960s to the narco war? The late Charles Bowden, America's great writer on the border, wrote of "the biggest cartel in Mexico: the Mexican army." Julián Cardona, the great chronicler and photographer of the narco war in Ciudad Juárez during its grim primacy as the world's most dangerous city, always said that the same hand of state behind violence against the left was at play among the drug lords.
Lesser writers on Mexico, including myself, have insisted that the line between legitimacy and criminality, upon which Mexico's international relations are based, is a fantasy, that the line between legality and illegality is a lie, not only within Mexico, but internationally, with regard to the laundering of the profits of crime.
The Mexican state, however, continued with such language as that of General Jorge Juárez Loera, commander of the 11th Military Region, who told a press conference in Chihuahua in 2008: "I would like to see the reporters change their articles and where they say 'one more murdered person' instead say, 'one less criminal'."
Now we can see the arguments advanced by Cacho and Hernández, Bowden and Cardona, utterly vindicated by, in their way, the most shocking of many appalling mass murders that have taken the death toll past 100,000 since 2006, with 20,000 missing. Shocking, because it is now brazenly clear that the Mexican state and cartel death squads are as one.
Until now perhaps the most poignantly innocent victims in any single massacre were 72 migrants from Central America summarily executed in 2010 for failure to pay added fees to their traffickers, probably the Zetas cartel. Now these young people are kidnapped from their village of Ayotzinapa, near the tourist resort of Acapulco, by police from nearby Iguala, apparently on instructions from the mayor, worried that a protest might spoil a public event hosted by his wife. It is one of the largest transfers of wealth in American history, and yet it has gone largely unnoticed."
Mark Karlin: In your third chapter, you state that the "corporate leaders at its vanguard can rightly be considered the true winners of the war on terror." You refer to these people as post-9/11, corporate entrepreneurs and opportunists. Can you provide a couple of brief examples?
James Risen: In chapter three, I focus on corporate leaders who have largely tried to avoid the limelight, but have nonetheless been among those who have profited the most from the war on terror. People like the Blue brothers, whose company, General Atomics, has produced the Predator and Reaper drones, the signature weapons of the global war on terror.
I also write about J. Philip London, executive chairman of CACI, the huge defense and intelligence contractor that was caught up in the Abu Ghraib scandal but then managed to continue to thrive in the war on terror, and Robert McKeon, a clever Wall Street maven who acquired Dyncorp as it profited from rival Blackwater's problems. McKeon eventually committed suicide, and the sale of assets by his estate after his death provided a glimpse at the massive wealth accumulated by the corporate leaders who benefit from being on the top rung of the war on terror.
MK: Your prologue refers to the "homeland security-industrial" complex (including the related wars since 9/11) costing an estimated $4 trillion. Where did all that money go?
JR: "The Homeland Security Industrial Complex operates differently than the traditional Military Industrial Complex. Instead of spending on ships, airplanes and other big weapons systems, much of the money goes to secretive intelligence contractors who perform secret counter-terrorism work for the CIA, the FBI, the Pentagon and other agencies. Because it is all classified, there is no public debate about the massive amounts of money being poured into these contractors. And with little oversight, there is no way to determine whether these contractors have performed well or poorly. Four trillion dollars is the best estimate for the total price tag of the war on terror, including the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and much of it has gone to shadowy contractors. It is one of the largest transfers of wealth in American history, and yet it has gone largely unnoticed."
MK: Part III of Pay Any Price is entitled "Endless War." You divide this section into chapters focusing on "The War on Decency," "The War on Normalcy" and the "The War on Truth." That is an inversion of the government-vaunted war to protect Homeland Security into an immoral attack on the nation's moral integrity. How did we arrive at such an abandonment of our ethical standards?
JR: "If you recall, just after 9/11, Vice President Dick Cheney famously said that 'the gloves come off'. What that really meant was that the US was deregulating national security, getting rid of the rules and regulations that had governed national security since the post-Watergate reform era of the 1970s. As a result, we have conducted the war on terror in a climate in which there are few rules or limits on American actions. The message was clearly sent throughout the government that nothing should get in the way of stopping any future terrorist attack – and that message created a dangerous climate that we still live in today."
MK: You discuss the relentless and tenacious persecution of whistleblowers under the Bush and Obama administrations (with the pace steadily picking up under the latter). In your many examples, you describe the harassment and shunning of Diane Roark, a staff member of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence. Can you briefly explain what she tried to expose and how she was hounded into retirement and beyond?
JR: "I consider Diane Roark to be one of the unsung heroes of the post-9/11 era. A former Reagan White House staffer, at the time of 9/11 Roark was the House intelligence committee staffer in charge of oversight of the National Security Agency. Soon after 9/11, NSA staffers told her about the NSA's new domestic spying operation. She immediately realized that it was illegal, but at first thought it must be a rogue operation. She went to the staff director and minority staff director at the House intelligence committee to warn the chairman and ranking member about the operation, but the word came back that she should keep her mouth shut and stop talking about it. She realized that the chairman and ranking member already knew about it.
She then started to try to warn other senior officials that she knew throughout the government about the program, but found at every turn that they already knew about it and were involved in a massive cover-up. Finally, she had a dramatic showdown with NSA director Michael Hayden about the program, in which she told him that it was illegal. He responded that if it ever became public, the NSA and the Bush Administration could count on the 'majority of nine' – meaning the approval of the Supreme Court. She then tried to get a message to the Supreme Court chief justice, but never heard back. She never leaked to the press and retired from the government depressed that she hadn't been able to stop the program.
Years later, after The New York Times disclosed the existence of the NSA domestic spying program, the FBI raided her house, because they wrongly thought that she was the source for the story. She had kept her concerns within the system and was still persecuted. Her case shows that it would have been impossible for Edward Snowden to stay within the system and do what he did."
MK: KBR – formerly Kellogg, Brown and Root – at the time it was first contracted as a multibillion-dollar contractor to support the US military in Iraq and Afghanistan (and elsewhere), is described in detail by you as a company "too big to fail" in the war on terror. Can you provide some highlights?
JR: KBR was by far the largest military contractor in the Iraq war. It provided food, housing and other basic services to US military personnel in Iraq and throughout the war received about $39 billion in contracts.
At the peak of the war, KBR had more personnel in Iraq than did the British Army. The United States simply could not have fought the war in Iraq without KBR. By providing almost all basic services in combat zones for US military personnel, KBR allows the United States to fight wars without a draft.
If the Army doesn't need soldiers to peel potatoes and instead has contractors do it, then it can fight wars of choice with a relatively small volunteer Army, and thus doesn't need to seek the political approval of American voters before it goes to war. So KBR is critical to the war effort, thus the chairman of the largely toothless commission on wartime contracting threw up his hands and wondered aloud whether KBR was too big to fail.
KBR was investigated for a series of problems – including the electrocution of US soldiers in barracks in Iraq with faulty wiring and the use of massive burn pits at US bases in Iraq that allegedly led to lung problems among US military personnel. But despite the investigations, KBR kept its massive contracts.
MK: You describe how billions and billions of dollars were shrink-wrapped and flown to Baghdad with little accountability – and that in one documented case, several billions of dollars ended up in a bunker in Lebanon (with the US making no attempt to retrieve the money). Who bears responsibility for the slipshod shipment of massive cash to Iraq, much of which went into the pockets of Iraqi leaders and other private pockets?
JR: The cash in the bunker was from the Development Fund for Iraq, a fund set up to hold Iraqi government oil revenues. After the US invasion of Iraq in 2003, the Bush Administration and the Coalition Provisional Authority decided to airlift $12-$14 billion in cash, taken from the DFI accounts in the United States, to Baghdad on Air Force C-17s. But after it arrived, much of it disappeared. Years later, Stuart Bowen, the special inspector general for Iraq, investigated and discovered that nearly $2 billion had been stolen by powerful Iraqis and had been moved to a bunker in Lebanon, where it was being hidden. It was one of the largest robberies in modern history.
MK: What was the role of the Bush administration free marketers in trying to reshape the economy in Iraq into a Milton Friedman model?
JR: Bush Administration officials did not want to engage in much post-war planning for Iraq, leading to chaos in the months after the invasion. Still, many of the US officials who joined the Coalition Provisional Authority, the US-led occupation government in Iraq in the first year following the invasion, were Republican ideologues who dreamed of creating a new Iraq based on the economic proposals, like the flat tax, that they had failed to get enacted in the United States. Eventually, the insurgency in Iraq ended those dreams.
MK: You state in your book: "The level of resources devoted to fighting terrorism still remains out of proportion to the actual threat level posed by terrorism." What is keeping it going as a major initiative of a government within a government?
JR: There is now an entire mercenary class in the United States that has been created in the post-9/11 era, both inside the government and outside, that has an incentive to keep the war going. They wouldn't have jobs without endless war. At the same time, politicians know that if they raise too many questions about the war on terror and the massive funding levels, they will be labeled soft on terror. So they all go along with it.
MK: What is SERE and how did it become manipulated to support torture?
JS: SERE is the acronym for the military's survival training program, in which pilots and other personnel are put through a simulated prisoner camp and subjected to simulated torture. The CIA used the torture techniques simulated at SERE as the basis for its "enhanced interrogation" techniques against detainees. In Pay Any Price, I disclose that the agency used these techniques even though the best and most widely accepted research conducted on SERE showed that the techniques could not be used to elicit accurate information.
MK: In regards to your own travails as a journalist, the government is trying to force you to reveal a confidential source relating to the shadow intelligence gathering community. You have stood steadfastly against giving up a source for information contained within your book, State of War: The Secret History of the CIA and the Bush Administration. The Obama administration is pursuing its legal case against you to the Supreme Court. You appear as resolute as ever to uphold the journalistic right to shield sources. Would anything change that courageous stance?

KBR was investigated for a series of problems – including the electrocution of US soldiers in barracks in Iraq with faulty wiring and the use of massive burn pits at US bases in Iraq that allegedly led to lung problems among US military personnel. But despite the investigations, KBR kept its massive contracts.
MK: You describe how billions and billions of dollars were shrink-wrapped and flown to Baghdad with little accountability – and that in one documented case, several billions of dollars ended up in a bunker in Lebanon (with the US making no attempt to retrieve the money). Who bears responsibility for the slipshod shipment of massive cash to Iraq, much of which went into the pockets of Iraqi leaders and other private pockets?
JR: The cash in the bunker was from the Development Fund for Iraq, a fund set up to hold Iraqi government oil revenues. After the US invasion of Iraq in 2003, the Bush Administration and the Coalition Provisional Authority decided to airlift $12-$14 billion in cash, taken from the DFI accounts in the United States, to Baghdad on Air Force C-17s. But after it arrived, much of it disappeared. Years later, Stuart Bowen, the special inspector general for Iraq, investigated and discovered that nearly $2 billion had been stolen by powerful Iraqis and had been moved to a bunker in Lebanon, where it was being hidden. It was one of the largest robberies in modern history.
MK: What was the role of the Bush administration free marketers in trying to reshape the economy in Iraq into a Milton Friedman model?
JR: Bush Administration officials did not want to engage in much post-war planning for Iraq, leading to chaos in the months after the invasion. Still, many of the US officials who joined the Coalition Provisional Authority, the US-led occupation government in Iraq in the first year following the invasion, were Republican ideologues who dreamed of creating a new Iraq based on the economic proposals, like the flat tax, that they had failed to get enacted in the United States. Eventually, the insurgency in Iraq ended those dreams.
MK: You state in your book: "The level of resources devoted to fighting terrorism still remains out of proportion to the actual threat level posed by terrorism." What is keeping it going as a major initiative of a government within a government?
JR: There is now an entire mercenary class in the United States that has been created in the post-9/11 era, both inside the government and outside, that has an incentive to keep the war going. They wouldn't have jobs without endless war. At the same time, politicians know that if they raise too many questions about the war on terror and the massive funding levels, they will be labeled soft on terror. So they all go along with it.
MK: What is SERE and how did it become manipulated to support torture?
JS: SERE is the acronym for the military's survival training program, in which pilots and other personnel are put through a simulated prisoner camp and subjected to simulated torture. The CIA used the torture techniques simulated at SERE as the basis for its "enhanced interrogation" techniques against detainees. In Pay Any Price, I disclose that the agency used these techniques even though the best and most widely accepted research conducted on SERE showed that the techniques could not be used to elicit accurate information.
MK: In regards to your own travails as a journalist, the government is trying to force you to reveal a confidential source relating to the shadow intelligence gathering community. You have stood steadfastly against giving up a source for information contained within your book, State of War: The Secret History of the CIA and the Bush Administration. The Obama administration is pursuing its legal case against you to the Supreme Court. You appear as resolute as ever to uphold the journalistic right to shield sources. Would anything change that courageous stance?
JS: No.
